Mini-Refresh

Joss & Main - The Style Bungalow

When it comes to decorating my studio apartment (click here to see a full tour), I take small steps. Simple things like rearranging my coffee table display, switching out my old rug for a new one, changing my bedding, adding a new piece of artwork to my collection can totally change the look and feel of my apartment.

That’s because tiny floor plans, like mine (my apartment is less than 500 sq. ft.), don’t allow for a lot of wiggle room when it comes to rearranging furniture. Everything counts in a small space. Just moving my coffee tables or placing my accent chair in a different spot or rearranging my decorative items can completely change the flow.

Most people think they have to go out and buy new coffee tables or a new TV stand to refresh their space. But Nope. No need to do so. Like I said, take small steps, like buying a new rug, and you’ll see how much it surprisingly can make a difference, especially if you’re living in a studio apartment like me.

Case in point – check out this picture of my “living room” with my old rug.

Here’s what it looks like with my new rug, from Joss & Main’s latest sale (yes, they are having a big sale right now):

Immediately, it feels lighter and brighter!

And here’s what it looks like now, with the addition of a new piece of artwork. Again, it’s lighter and within seconds, changes the look of the entire setup.

I also moved around a couple knick knacks on my coffee table and added these adorable elephant bookends!

Adding plants doesn’t hurt too. Plants and flowers are inexpensive and don’t take up a lot of room. Plus, they add a nice pop of color and make a room look interesting. And not to mention, make you smile when you wake up in the morning.

I buy myself flowers once a week! It’s worth it. But that’s about the extent of my gardening abilities. Since I’m in and out a lot, it’s hard for me to take care of living plants (with the exception of bouquets that I can toss out in a week). So, I found this set of three faux-agave (yes, faux plants) from Joss & Main that look like the real thing. You can’t tell from a distance!

I will say, on the brighter side of things, living in a small space means having less stuff – less furniture to deal with, less clutter, less mess! You learn to become very efficient. Everything you buy must serve a purpose!
