There are women, like the French or Audrey Hepburn or Natalie Portman or Amal Clooney for example, who have mastered the art of timeless style. The kind of style that can work in any era. The kind of style that’s timeless yet en vogue. The kind of style that works for any woman – no matter what age. So how do they do it?

In my years of blogging, writing about fashion and experimenting with different brands and outfits, I’ve narrowed it down to a couple things. A couple staples that will make your wardrobe timeless.

But before I do, let’s talk a little bit about individuality and sense of style. Because mine’s changed so much over the years. And it’s important to note.

Before I started a blog, I used to save pictures of my favorite outfits (from bloggers and magazines). I would go to the mall, pictures in hand, and try to replicate those looks… many times succeeding in buying exact (if not similar) items. As soon as I would get home, I would put on the exact looks from my pictures and well… get frustrated.

Every. Single. Time. Because it never worked.

Not because I didn’t like the clothing. Or because I didn’t like the outfit on me. It just wasn’t me. So I would reinvent the look to fit my personality.

Have you ever heard the saying, “fashion is about what you buy, but style is what you do with it?” Anyone can replicate a look or buy the exact outfit from a blogger, but it’s what you ultimately do with it at home in front of the mirror that makes you unique. And if there’s one thing a timeless woman rocks at – it’s this. She adds – something, I don’t know what… maybe an accessory or lipstick or a little bit of attitude – that sets her apart and makes her stand out.

So, before I talk about staples, the point here is to be yourself. Just because I’m telling you to buy something or wear something a certain way, doesn’t mean you have to do it exactly the same way. Besides, that’s so un-creative. Ick. Just be you.

Ok, here we go:

Pay attention to craftsmanship, simplicity and versatility. A beautiful camel coat (with a red bandana around your neck, or a black dress or a pair of OTK boots or boyfriend jeans) looks ahh-mazing with everything.

Your accessories can make or break an outfit. Look for pieces that naturally draw you in. That reflect your age. There are no pieces that are necessarily “meant” for older or younger women, just how you style them. Think: ballet flats vs. pumps; a simple gold necklace with the word “Love” on it vs. a chunky gold necklace your mom would wear. An IT bag vs. a classic Chanel. Choose one or two pieces (that’s it) that speak to you.

Avoid wacky prints. Prints and patterns are super fun, I experiment with them all the time. But if you’re going for a timeless look, stick to the classics – like stripes or dots. Or, wear one print (think: leopard) and that’s it.
